Communication with other workers on site
All staff report to reception / the building manager for induction on arrival. The site contact will say what else is happening in the building. Northline will say what isolation is planned and when power will be off. Notices on the corridor. Cleaners and security briefed that the ground floor riser is a no-go until lock-off is removed.
First aid
Northline provides a trained first aider on this shift and a first aid kit in the van. The appointed person can call an ambulance. Do not touch a casualty still in contact with live parts — isolate first if it is safe. Nearest A&E as the site induction. All staff shown the kit location at the briefing.
Manual handling
Staff have been instructed on manual handling. Two-person lift for the consumer unit. Split cable. Use a trolley from the loading bay. Do not lift beyond capability. Supervisor controls handling on the night.
Material handling
Unload to the agreed drop zone, not the fire route. Keep it tidy. Collect boards and cable as needed. Stack so the pile is stable. Take waste out the same night.
Personal protective equipment (PPE)
PPE is the last line of defence. On this job: safety boots, company workwear, eye protection and gloves for installation. Hearing protection not required for this task. RPE not required if dust is vacuumed. Hard hat if other trades work above — none planned tonight.
Preparation & induction
This RAMS is briefed before lock-off. Queries go to A. Khan. Follow building rules. Other activities that could affect this task: evening cleaners — they will be told the exclusion is in force.
Competence / training
Qualified electrician, 18th Edition, ECS card. Supervisor (A. Khan) on site. No lone isolation. Testers in calibration.
Welfare
Use existing building toilets and rest area as agreed. Leave them clean. Drinking water available. No work while fatigued — this is an evening shift, plan a break.
Procedure
| 1 | Report to site contact / building manager. Confirm it is safe to set up. Sign in. |
| 2 | Put on general PPE. Brief this RAMS and the isolation plan with the team. |
| 3 | Inspect the work area. Report unforeseen hazards. Do not start if the office is still occupied without agreement. |
| 4 | Set exclusion zone, barriers and warning signage on the corridor. Keep the fire route clear. |
| 5 | Identify the circuit. Agree isolation with the building manager. Complete the permit. |
| 6 | Isolate, lock off and tag. Prove the tester, prove dead at the point of work, prove the tester again (GS38). |
| 7 | Daily pre-work check of tools, podium and test kit. |
| 8 | Replace the consumer unit. Extend the ring final circuit to two new sockets. Install to BS 7671. |
| 9 | Inspect, test and certificate. Do not restore until tests are satisfactory and the team is clear. |
| 10 | Remove lock-off only when safe. Inform the building manager that supply is restored. |
| 11 | Vacuum waste. Remove barriers. Leave the corridor clear. |
| 12 | See site contact. Hand over certificates. Sign out. Remove PPE. |
Environmental considerations
Vacuum, do not sweep, board offcuts and dust. Take waste back to the van for licensed disposal. IPA wipes: small quantity, cap the pack, no drains. Cardboard and cable offcuts segregated.
Emergency procedures
Discuss with the site contact what to follow in this building. Raise the alarm. Isolate if safe. First aider on site. Do not touch a casualty still in contact with live parts. Assembly point as induction. Report RIDDOR if the criteria are met. Nearest A&E as the site induction.
